Abate Barihon

Abatte Barihun is a jazz saxophonist and composer, Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Barihun got a hold of a saxophone at an early age and enrolled himself in the Addis Ababa University Music School. It was there that he was first exposed to the Western jazz tradition. At 1999 Abatte came to israel, after performing on a world tour with the known singer Mahmoud Ahmed.

Since Abatte came to israel, he established and led “Tezeta” Ensemble, “Ras Deshen” Ensemble and the “Kuluma” band (together with Itamar Borochov, Uri Naveh..). Played with Ariel Zilber, Ehud Banai, Berry Sakharof, Anat Fort, Omri Mor and many others. For 6 years he performed with legend Mulatu Astatke.

Abatte Barihun is one of the founding fathers of the Ethio-Jazz scene in Israel, and is widely known for his unique sound, and big soul reflects in both singing and playing.
